Project Name
How to: Gentex 511 Rear View Mirror Upgrade

Project Description
Upgrade your non-dimming mirror to an auto-dimming one with compass and temp display.

Skill Level
Simple

Project Vehicle
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Colorado LT
Year: 2009
Engine: 5.3L V8
Mileage: 98,000

Tools Needed
Torx T20 screwdriver
Wire strippers and crimpers
Soldering iron and solder (not necessary but can be used)

Project Time
0.5-1 hour

Project Cost
$130 (mirror purchased from CamsMirrors on eBay. Came with sensor and pigtail (for both mirror and sensor)

These can be found at salvage yards too. You'll just have to look around.

1. Step One

Remove your existing mirror and install the new mirror (see ADDITIONAL INFORMATION at the bottom for use with 7 pin mirrors)

i. disconnect the electrical connector
ii. Use the Torx to loosen the retaining screw
iii. slide the mirror upwards off of the windshield mounting tab.

Reverse procedure for installation.

2. Step Two

Locate the 12 pin connector behind the air box. This is where you'll tap two wires for the ambient temp sensor, green and green/white (Pins G & H)

3. Step Three

Remove the grille and place the sensor in the central grille support bar from behind.

4. Step Four

Run your extended pigtail wires to the connector behind the air box and connect the yellow from the sensor to the green wire and the green/white from the sensor to green/white. If your sensor pigtail doesn't have colored wires, verify that the temperature displays on the mirror when you connect to the taps. If it displays "OC", swap the connections.

And that's it!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

For trucks with 7 pin mirrors, you will need to splice the 16 pin harness for the Gentex 511 to the existing harness in your truck. Here's the pinouts for the connectors for you to reference when splicing.
